A Comparative Study on Health Needs of the Aged in Rural and Urban Residency

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the health needs of the aged according to residence in order to improve nursing care for the aged in the community.
One hundred and forty seven rural residents and 153 urban residents over 60yrs of age were surveyed from June 7 to July 12, 1982 and the results were as follows.
1. The highest rate (30.7%) of response was obtained from the group of 60~64yrs of age. Mean ages of respondents of rural residents were 68.4yrs and in urban residents, 71.3yrs. Majority of respondents (85.3%) hoped to live at the present residence.
Fifty two percent of respondents lived with married sons, 13.3% with spouses only, and 5.7% alone.
2. Most frequently mentioned daily activity was house keeping (37.7%). Those who make money among rural residents were 22.4% which was higher than urban residents (10.5%).
3. Most frequently mentioned problems in daily life were physical ailments (31.4%), followed by general weakness (20.3%). These problems were more frequent in rural residents than in urban residents.
4. Among respondents 40.3% were satisfied with their life and 42.3% were evaluated "poor" in their health.
There was observed a correlation between "life satisfaction" and "self evaluated health" in both rural and urban residents.
5. Those who had health problems were 60.7% in total.
The frequency rate, however, was significantly higher in rural residents (73.5%) than in urban residents (48.4%). Only 27.5% among those who had health problems underwent medical treatments.
The reason most frequently mentioned as to their disregard for medical cares were regarding their health problems were that the problems merely an aging phenomenon (42.7%) in rural residents, while financial difficulties (48.0%) in urban residents.
6. The general health status was poorer among rural residents than those in urban areas and their more common ailments is expressed as follows: musculoskeletal state (51.0%), dental problem (36.7%) and vision (33.3%).
7. In home care the most frequently mentioned source of family support were married sons (43.7%), followed by spouses (27.0%).
The majority of respondents (67.0%) expressed a positive attitude toward the home care services by community health nurse and this was especially so among urban residents (73.2%).
